Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu PF steals developmental projects to boost election victory

MUTARE – Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu (PF) party has been exposed in its desperate attempts to win the Mutasa Central ward 10 by-election, as the party allegedly claimed projects done by other organizations as its own.

The election is slated for this Saturday. The ward 10 seat was declared vacant following the incarceration of former councillor Frank Chitembwe in February this year for public violence. He was slapped with a two-year jail term for public violence in the January 14-16 massive protests.

Chitembwe made an urgent application to stop the election at the High Court in Mutare arguing that he was now out of custody. The High Court threw out the application.

The Mutasa Central MP Trevor Saruwaka on Monday said Zanu PF had claimed that the roads rehabilitation and two boreholes sunk by the District Development Fund (DDF) were its own projects.

“Road graded by ZEC for polling station access is being claimed by Zanu PF,” said Saruwaka

” Zanu PF has armtwisted ZEC to grade Jombe road which is already passable. They want the grader to be seen by the voters on the main road and claim that it is Zanu PF doing the projects,” Saruwaka said.

“There are two boreholes sunk by the DDF but Zanu PF is claiming that it sunk the same,” he added.

Last week a high powered Zanu PF delegation led by the party’s national chairperson and Defense Minister Oppar Muchinguri descended in the ward for a campaign rally.

Notables at the rally were Patrick Chinamasa, Mike Nyambuya and Chido Madiwa. MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa will hold a campaign rally for its candidate Rose Mukodza in Mutasa Central ward 10 in Wednesday.

Other candidates are Margaret Tindika (Zanu PF) and Justice Chirimo (NCA).
