Will Pitso join the elite at the top?

When Pitso Mosimane became the first black South African to win the PSL title with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2014, it was clear that it was only just the beginning of greater things to com.

Five years later Mosimane has an opportunity to join an elite group of coaches who have won the PSL title on four occasions.

Gordon Igesund, Gavin Hunt and the late Ted Dumitru are at the top of the list with four PSL titles to their names and, should Sundowns beat Free State Stars at Goble Park on Saturday (15h00), Mosimane will be right up there with these three gentlemen.

Igesund won the title with Manning Rangers, Santos, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns. Hunt bagged three consecutive championships with SuperSport United and a few years later led Bidvest Wits to their first ever league crown.

Dumitru, the late Romanian coach who is considered a legend in this country, won back-to-back titles with Sundowns in the late 90s and repeated this feat with Kaizer Chiefs in 2003/04 and 2004/05.

Sundowns go into the final day of the current season on top of the standings, with a lead of two points over second-placed Orlando Pirates, who dropped points last weekend away to Cape Town City.

Going into the final weekend of the season, there’s a pending case involving Sundowns and their defender Wayne Arendse after the Premier Soccer League appealed a decision that was made by its disciplinary committee regarding the matter.

Arendse played in a league match against Wits in the first half of the season, even though he was not on the team sheet.

The DC fined Sundowns R250 000 and Arendse R50 000, but the PSL has taken the matter to SAFA’s Legal Counsel in the hopes of overturning the sanction.

According to a submission obtained by, this has been done on the grounds that the DC, through Advocate Joe Nalane, “erred and/or misdirected itself” in its ruling.

The PSL want Wits to be handed a 3-0 victory and for Arendse to serve a two-match ban and in the event that Sundowns oppose the appeal, they should pay the costs of the sitting.
