Al Ahly boss refusing to resign
Al Ahly manager Martin Lasarte says he not ready to throw in the towel after their embarrassing CAF Champions League quarter-final exit.
The Club of the Century were dumped out of the competition on Saturday with a 5-1 aggregate scoreline, despite securing victory in their return leg at the Borg Al Aarab Stadium in Alexandria.
Walid Azaro’s 66th-minute header was not enough to spark a miraculous comeback for Lasarte’s charges after the humiliating 5-0 drubbing in Tshwane in the first-leg of the tie. However, the former Real Sociedad boss is adamant he remains the right man to lead the 40-time Egyptian champions forward amid the calls for his resignation from the clubs’ supporters.
“We did everything we could to change the situation. On Friday, we watched the Barcelona vs PSG game in order to motivate the players,” Lasarte said in his post-match press conference, as per KingFut.
“We wanted to score early, and we nearly did through Azaro and Amr El-Sulya. I am proud of Al Ahly players despite the result. That’s football.
“I don’t think about resigning from my post. I have only joined Al Ahly three months ago. We had a lot of injuries and we were 12 points behind Zamalek. He added: “We are currently top of the league table and don’t have many injuries, but if the club wants me to leave I will respect their decision.
“But for me, I will never think about leaving after losing a game. I have a lot of goals that I want to achieve with Al Ahly.”
