SAFA technical director Neil Tovey says CAF club competitions are preparing South African players mentally for tough conditions.

Bafana Bafana legend and SAFA Technical Director Neil Tovey says the senior national team’s win under hostile conditions in Tunisia against Libya showed how playing in CAF Club competitions prepares South African players mentally.

A 2 – 1 win on Sunday saw Bafana booking a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations without a defeat in their qualifying campaign. Mamelodi Sundowns has been doing well in the Champions League, while Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits, Cape Town City and Free State Stars have all been involved in CAF club competitions in recent years.

“It obvoiusly plays a role in everything,” Tovey tells

“It’s very, very important that we do well in our CAF Championship matches. It’s all about getting experience on the continent, you can’t buy that experience you know.

“Let’s wait for the draw and see who we are going to play. It’s not about the last time or whatever you know, let’s go and just play our game, see what happens.”

“Mokoko”, as the former Kaizer Chiefs captain was known in his playing days, says the determination and hunger the players showed on Sunday should be taken to AFCON.

“That’s how it should always be, it shouldn’t be anything different. You are playing for your country, so it shouldn’t be anything different. It’s just a case of a strong mental approach to the game, and that’s what you need. There’s enough time to prepare after the [PSL] season finishes. The planning comes when the draw is done, which is when we will know who we are playing against. Everything will be discussed when the draw is done, all the planning will then be put into place.” Kickoff
